India’s VC funding shrinks as global surge continues

In Q1-Q3 2026, India’s venture capital funding declined by 3% year-over-year, while global investments surged by 137%, according to GlobalData’s Financial Deals Database. Deal activity in India fell by 12%, contrasting sharply with global trends where funding values rose significantly in the U.S. and China. India accounted for 7% of global deal volume but only 1% of global funding value, highlighting a gap between transaction volume and funding attractiveness.
The U.S. saw a 2% increase in deal volume and a 161% surge in funding value, capturing 72% of the global funding total. China experienced a 33% rise in deal volume and a 212% jump in funding value, accounting for 10% of global investments. The UK’s funding value increased by 77% despite a 1% drop in deal volume.
Aurojyoti Bose, Lead Analyst at GlobalData, noted that India’s slowdown reflects heightened investor scrutiny. “India’s contraction across both metrics highlights a protracted period of investor scrutiny and disciplined capital allocation. Venture investors seem to have exercised heightened restraint, demanding proven unit economics, clearer paths to profitability, and stronger corporate governance before deploying capital, keeping the country’s overall VC activity relatively muted,” he commented. Bose added, “India’s startup ecosystem remains structurally sound, but reviving large-scale capital inflows will hinge on mature startups demonstrating sustained profitability and viable market exits. As global investors reassess emerging market allocations, companies that combine scalable business models with capital efficiency will be best positioned to drive the next cycle of venture expansion.”
