EWU Moves to Next Roos Field Renovation Phase
Eastern Washington University (EWU) is advancing to the next phase of renovations at its Roos Field stadium, with an $8 million project set to enhance fan experiences and generate additional revenue for the university’s athletic department.
New Press Box and Enhanced Amenities
The second phase of a planned $25 million overhaul, primarily funded by private donations, will see the construction of an raised press box above the eastern grandstands. This new press box will not only provide an updated area for event coverage but also free up space on the west side of the stadium, according to EWU Athletic Director Tim Collins.
Currently, the west side of the stadium is home to general admission seating, restrooms, and concession stands. The newly available space, once the press box is constructed, will allow for improved fan amenities and a more diverse range of premium seating options. Collins anticipates that the project will enhance the amenities that fans and alumni desire, creating more revenue opportunities for Eastern Athletics. Some of these enhanced amenities could include wider, more comfortable seating, premium box seats, club-level seating, and upgraded concession areas with a wider variety of food and drink options.
Timeline and Additional Projects
Construction on the second phase is scheduled to commence in 2027 and wrap up by the start of the 2028 football season. A ceremonial new is planned for Oct. 10 during EWU’s homecoming weekend. This timeline ensures that the renovations are completed in time for the start of the next football season, minimizing disruption to fans and student-athletes.

This stadium renovation follows the completion of phase one – a $2.5 million track renovation in August. The updated track, a six-lane, all-weather surface, provides a safer environment for student-athletes to train and compete. It also meets NCAA regulations, allowing EWU to host more high school and collegiate meets, potentially attracting more visitors to campus and generating additional revenue.
The $8 million project is part of EWU’s wider capital improvement plan, which includes a $110 million Science Building expansion, a $51 million residence hall construction, and a $17 million package of energy upgrades, among other projects. These investments aim to enhance the student experience and prepare the campus for future educational needs in the Inland Northwest by creating state-of-the-art learning and living spaces.
EWU President Shari McMahan emphasizes the strategic nature of these investments. She states, “Eastern is positioning itself for the future by making strategic campus investments to attract and retain students while giving faculty the environment they need to expand hands-on learning opportunities. These investments are key to our mission of providing a high-quality, affordable education to a diverse student body.”
McMahan’s comments show the university’s commitment to using these capital improvements to create modern, efficient learning and recreational spaces that will attract students, faculty, and visitors to the campus.
